Because of the name given to these doors, one may assume that they originated in Renaissance France, but apparently, French doors’ country of origin was, in fact, Italy, during the same period. Nonetheless, in French, these products are called “portes-fenêtres” – translated as “door-sized windows” or similarly, “windowed-doors”, which are designed to admit more natural light into otherwise dark French interior spaces.

Traditional French Doors
Traditional-style French doors consist of wooden frames into which relatively small squares or rectangles of glass are fitted with mullion-like vertical and horizontal supporting wood flights. Doors are made in matching pairs, which are hinged on the outer edges so that both or one door can swing away to open, while they meet, close and latch or lock in the centre when both doors are closed.
