Toasting Timeless French Doors with French Flair
As suppliers of quality, solid wood doors and more, Door City was established to make buying doors easy. We’ve also explored the origins of these practical but innovative inventions. Think about doors – .have you ever wondered about their history? What about French doors? Are they indeed from France, as their name suggests?
Vive La France
As it happens, French doors are so named because they are, in fact, a French innovation, and they are also an adaptation of their forerunners, standard solid timber doors. They were initially created for reasons that were primarily practical, rather than for their unquestionable aesthetic appeal, which has proved to be timeless and eternally popular. There may indeed be merit in raising a chilled glass of France’s finest favourite to toast this creation.
The Quintessential French Door
Essentially, French doors consist of a pair of wooden frames of the same size, with a panel of glass fitted into each frame, enabling people to have a clear field of vision through the doorway from within, even when the doors are completely closed. When opening these doors, they swing away to the sides through 1800 on side-mounted hinges. Upon closing, the pair meet, latch and lock/unlock in the centre of the doorway.
Doors with a Purpose
Their initial purpose was to let more natural light into dark building interiors at a time when the only other sources of lighting available within interior spaces consisted of handmade candles, lamps or a fire in the hearth.
Tall Windows
French doors evolved from larger-than-normal, tall windows. By the 17th century, in their country of origin, they were known as “portes-fenêtres” – “door windows”, or in English-speaking countries, “French doors”, a wonderful addition to interior and exterior areas of the well-presented home – then and now.

Applications
French doors are most often installed to lead and link to outdoor spaces and pleasing exterior areas. They’re usually fitted to open outwards from the interior of the building, thereby requiring no extra interior space when opening. Alternatively, the product may be installed to open inwards if the homeowner so wishes.
Because they are so aesthetically pleasing, French doors are equally effective to close off one room from another, as required, in an interior space. This is an invaluable addition to a large, modern open-plan area, which may be easily transformed into two smaller areas, without cutting off the ambient light or creating a hemmed-in atmosphere.
